Agriculture is making life easier in Nepal

Sabina Itani Kathmandu, April 15
Nuwakot- Kamala Thapa, a farmer in a small village ever imagined that a farmer could live a comfortable life. The farming life she thought was about labouring all day in the scorching sun or in the pouring rain and barely making enough to feed the family. The life of farmer is better satisfied than the others. One of the farmers has returned from Malaysia and work on the farm, in Nuwakot village. He told that he have a house, a shop, farmland and other assets. He has the stable income from selling the vegetables he produces on the farm. Next farmer said that she have been able to give a better education to the children. Meanwhile, farmers are having increasing success with high value crops such as tomatoes and potatoes and have begun building a collection centre for the distribution and efficient market of the produce and for processing surplus vegetables. Village level cooperatives empower women by encouraging them to form women’s groups and receive training in small scale production. The group practices saving techniques for their new incomes, said by Ramila Ghimire( cooperative member). The annual harvest season is a matter of festivity, joy and prosperity for the farmers. Farming is subsistent in nature and crop is mostly integrated with livestock. In addition, Nepal grows a number of fruits and vegatbles crops. Human and animal labours are major souces of farm house.
